Jewelry Tree

by Mary on April 3, 2011

One of our favorite home decor sites is the relatively new Offbeat Home.

It’s amazing. Fully of happy, colorful, fun, offbeat houses that we would love to live in. So far we’ve found a ton of great ideas from real people that are creating their own happy little nests in their own way.

One great idea is this jewelry tree Aryll posted on Flickr.

So clever! Jewelry doubling as wall art is something I’ve done since high school but never in such a gorgeous way.  I love the vinyl wall decal she used to make it more like art. This is totally the next step for my own jewelry collection since it would be a great DIY project. And look, there are lots of awesome vinyl wall decals on Amazon.

National Geographic Magazine Shelf

by Mary on April 2, 2011

How perfect is this shelf made out of National Geographic magazines?

Sean Miller designed this awesome shelf made out of old issues of National Geographic magazines. It’s a fully functional bookshelf that make recycling look cool.

To make the shelf Sean coated about 80 magazines with a water/starch mixture and put pressure on them for a week to harden. He then took a ban saw and carved out a space for the shelf. Clever!

This is the next DIY project I’m going to attempt. I love that there are step by step instructions on Fiskars website.  It seems like such an easy craft but makes a big impact. It would be great to have a cute keyholder near the front door so I could lose my keys less often. [...]

I’ve always associated things like this to weddings or store shops. It never crossed my mind that it would work well in a home. But it does! It’s so fun and colorful and would be perfect during the spring when the wind would carry the ribbons all over. Beautiful. Via: ariadne at home
